Costco is a passion. Costco is like a massage.
Costco first opened its doors in 1983, and nearly four decades later, it's the fifth-largest retailer in the world. As of July 2021, Costco has a total of 813 warehouses located across four continents, the majority of which are in the United States.
People love Costco for a variety of reasons, including the great prices, the perks of being a member, the excellent customer service, the free samples, the company's reputation for treating all its workers well, and (of course) the fabulous food court.
Our Story
Back in 1983, people had to meet certain qualifications to be a Costco member. They had to either represent a business or be part of a particular group — a government employee, for example, or a member of a credit union. The annual membership fee was $25. Back then, the public was unfamiliar with the idea of paying an annual fee to shop in a big, cold warehouse.
But the Costco model wasn't brand new. It followed the lead of Price Club, a membership warehouse for small businesses that opened its first store in 1976 in San Diego. Costco's founder, Jim Sinegal, was a Price Club executive who left that company to start Costco with Jeff Brotman, according to Business Insider. Costco and Price Club merged in 1993 to create PriceCostco, which changed its name in 1997 to Costco Wholesale Corporation.

Costco finally opened near their hometown, these for ladies couldn’t wait. They were so excited that they planned to go all together, even sharing the same car. Needless to say, they aren’t friends any longer.
